“Trotting cracks” at the Forge.

Drawn by Thomas Worth, a Currier & Ives Artist who is also notable for his cartoons.

The fact that Worth carefully identified the animals in this print ( they are Mountain Boy, Grey Eagle and Lady Thorn), gives some indication of the contemporary interest in harness racing.

Although 19th century trotters were slow by modern standards, their careers were followed so keenly by the general public that whenever one of them bettered an established mark it became news of national importance. Small wonder that over 600 of Currier & Ives prints were concerned with the fascinating sport of “ knocking down the seconds down”.

This copy was made from the original Currier and Ives print, one of the collection owned by Nationwide Insurance, Columbus Ohio.
