Union-Castle Line: A deluxe, sixteen-page brochure printed in the mid-1950s for Union-Castle\'s First Class service to South Africa. Gold trim sparkles each page and all the photographs are in color. The large photos show public rooms dripping in Empire veneers, plush seating in satiny upholstery, and stateroom bedding piled high with silk covers. In 1954 there were eight ships on the crack mail route - PRETORIA CASTLE, EDINBURGH CASTLE, CAPETOWN CASTLE, ATHLONE CASTE, STIRLING CASTLE, CARNARVON CASTLE, WINCHESTER CASTLE, and ARUNDEL CASTLE. But the photos are not identified as to vessels.
Views show the Smoke Room, Long Gallery, Swimming Pool, a single cabin, Dining Saloon, Lounge, a bedroom of a suite, and numerous scenes of delighted passengers out and about the decks and in the public rooms. A cover photo of the PRETORIA CASTLE shows just how handsome these U-C ships were with their lavender hulls, classic rounded superstructures, and prominent red and black funnels.
