JIMMY PHILLIPS IS PACIFIC COAST25 MILE CHAMPDEL MAR, CALIF., OCT. 2—Eigh-teen thousand shouting race fans heretoday saw Jimmy Phillips, South Pasa-dena, California, ride his Triumph ma-chine to the pinnacle of West Coasthonors by winning the 25 Mile PacificCoast Championship under C.R.A. sanc-tion at the world-famous Del Mar racetrack. The entire program of ten eventsprovided the fastest and most closelycontested racing seen on a Pacific Coastmile track in fifteen years. The crowdwas so enthusiastic about the show thatone of the visitors from San Diego washeard to remark, “The C.R.A. is here tostay, more power to them.’’ At such abeautiful track, on such a cloudless day,in such beautiful surroundings of oceanand hills, the thirty-two qualifiers whoprovided the day’s racing (out of anentry for the time trials of 78 riders andmachines) shared most handsomely in theprize money and trophies which wereawarded.Time trials commenced at 11 A.M.,with every entrant receiving two tries, ifdesired, in order to assure that the day’sprogram would be contestd for by thefastest 32 riders. Ever-popular KellyMyers, Triumph, turned the fastest timeof the day in 45.76 sec., trailed by EdKretz, who qualified in 46.16 sec. Merefractions of seconds separated the balanceof the remaining 30 riders. The track wasdragged and watered and the show wasready to begin.The first 6 Lap Heat race saw JackHorn, the 1947 Daytona Amateur victorand the 1949 Daytona “200” leader for 167miles, cop an easy win on his Triumph.The second 6 Lap Heat “go” had DaveSilva, late of Honolulu, on the very lastlap push into the first pew and acknowl-edge the checkered flag.Heat No. 3 gave Chuck Basney, thatveteran of twelve years in all kinds ofmotorcycle competition, a chance to ex-hibit the performance of the machineentered by the one and only Jack Milne.The next stanza gave us all the FirstAct of the Kelly Myers-Ed Krotz drama.By JOHN LOWRYFor six miles these two stars flew likeV-2 rockets, with Kelly nosing Ed by aninch or two at the line.Next came Operation Shirey (Bob ishis first name) on his scarlet steed. Bobhad a handsome margin by “checkeredtime,” with second place being the realMcCoy between Luse and Nicolaides,with Nic being No. 2 boy by the thinnestof thin margins.Next Don Halley was hailed into firstplace by Starter Andy Anderson to com-plete the Six Lap Heats.Intermission Time brought forth a two-out-of-three “Drag-Out Race” between anAriel Square four and an “enlarged” 74O.H.V. The latter, complete with tractortire, proved once again that “there is nosubstitute for inches.” Again the dragand water treatment placed the tracksurface in top condition for the balanceof the program.Referee Stan Irons, that indefatigablebutter-ball, called out Myers, Kretz, BudHogan, and Bobby Turner for the Hel-met Dash of two laps. This time Ed gotan advance look at the blonde sweatergirl who was to present the Cup andKiss—and the other three boys just didn’thave a chance! The King won in a walkand was ready for his reward. The Tro-phy was a beautiful Gold Helmet with aminiature motorcycle mounted on thecrown. Ed donned the gorgeous helmet,received a “sisterly” kiss from the sweat-girl, posed for some pictures, restartedhis machine—then grabbed the darlinginto his brawny arms and completed theundertaking by “bussing” the blondebeauty as only Casanova Kretz can “buss’em,”Jack Horn and Company returned forthe Consolation—distance 8 Laps. Eightmiles after starting the Company was stilltrying to catch Mr. Horn. Jack’s ability,plus the unfaltering performance of oneof Tim Witham’s super-tuned Triumphs,placed the jack in Jack’s jeans for hiswonderful ride. Witham just grinned shy-like—he was waiting for the 25 MileChampionship event.The 10 Lap Semi-Main proved to bethe most exciting race of the day. DickMilligan, Tex Luse, and Turp Turpinshared the track for 10 long miles, usingno more space on the track than thatwhich could be covered by a postagestamp—nearly! Luse and Milligan tradedaround for several laps between first andsecond place, then Tex tackled the fencerail with his left hand. Result—twobroken knuckles! The checkered flagwaved at Milligan with Luse and Turpinless than two feet apart, but what’s acheckered flag or two when three C.R.A.boys get going wide open on the DelMar mile? Around they went again, eachintent on beating the other. As theypassed the line the eleventh time the redflag “woke ’em up” and they, quite sheep-ishly, retired from the course back totheir pits to be chided and ribbed byeveryone present. Just an extra C.R.A.thrill for the crowd!The 25 Miler had ten “hot” men lineup: Nicolaides, Shirey, Myers, Halley,Brundage, Phillips, Basney, Hogan, Tur-ner and Kretz. The starting cloth dippedand the pack disappeared into the firstturn. For two laps or so everyone waspretty even, then Kretz and Myers edgedinto the lead—side-by-side. On lap six,Kelly rode low, too low, and slipped toearth. With the luck of the Irish, Kellywasn’t even touched by the other nineriders. The field screamed on, Kellyarose, lifted the Tiger 100 into a verticalposition, restarted, and hastened frantical-ly after the field! A grand show of nerveafter falling off at 90 m.p.h.lEd Kretz was now the General, lead-ing his boys into the fray. Four lapslater Ed suffered the most severe accidentof the day—a rock shatterd a goggleslens, four pieces of glass lodging in Ed’sright eye. (Latest reports—no seriousdamage.) All this time Jimmy Phillips, onTim Whitham’s other super-tuned Tri-umph, decided to offer for the cash andglory. Jimmy’s offer was accepted—and theoffer contained the Championship! BobbyTurner staved off Bud Hogan for second...
