BERT CUMMINGSWINS 1949JACK PINES ENDUROBy OSCAR LENZPhotos by OSCAR LENZMISTER 1949 JACK PINESBert Cummings, sweepstakeswinner, happily displaystrophy and the venerableCow Bell. The famous Cow-Bell has returned tofamiliar pastures after a year’s sojournin distant fields. She had her fling atCalifornia high-life but was none theworse for wear and it is quite probablethat she would have welcomed anothertrip to the Golden West or any otherdirection for that matter—she is gettingto be quite a gadabout. Which is to saythat Bert Cummings, of Bay City, Mich-igan, Harley mounted, is the new Na-tional Endurance Run Champion by vir-tue of his winning of the 23rd runningof the Jack Pines, out of Lansing, thecapital city of Michigan. He had plentyof competition from the 267 starterswho represented the cream of this coun-try’s endurance riders from 17 states andCanada, mounted on 14 different brandsof motorcycles, ranging from the little“125” to a German B.M.W. sidecar jobwith sidecar wheel-drive. The toughestJack Pine course of recent years reducedthis record entry to 47 finishers withsome unheard of low scores rangingdown to a minus 816 but which adds upto determination plus. The CaliforniaWrecking Crew came out with nine en-tries which included their top men inthe persons of defending Champion EarlFlanders; Aub LeBard, last year’s classB winner; Doc Trainor, Green HornChamp; Red Kawelti, Green Horn 2ndplace man, Virgil Brown and severalothers. Aub made the best showing, fin-ishing 8th in Class A solo but they allstayed in there riding their hearts out.But the breaks did not come their way.The boy everyone was asking for andwe missed this year was none other thanthe Swede, sometimes called Belin. Inever knew we had so many Swedes uphere in Michigan but they were sureasking for him.The riders began to arrive early andit was soon evident we would have alarge entry and at drawing time, whichwas 3 o’clock Saturday afternoon, we hadtopped last year’s record entry. We de-cided to run two riders on a numberagain this year, which is necessary witha large field, but they were not allowedto choose their own partner, as they didlast year. The contestants were given aturn-to-turn route of cards on which eachturn was numbered and this number cor-responded to one on the route marker. If a rider got lost or found that some ofthe markers had been torn down hecould go back to the last turn marker hesaw, check the number with his routecard and follow this until straightenedout. Mufflers were required this year.Everything was pretty well taken careof in time for our Jack Pine banquet atthe Masonic Temple. Our guests, E. C.Smith, Sec. of the A.M.A., and CannonBall Baker, an old Jack Piner, gaveshort talks. The Old Jack Piner gavesome last minute instructions and by 9o’clock those that wanted to hit the hayearly and you couldn’t blame them—5:30 A.M. comes early. At 5:31 Referee Pop DeMiller checkedout Dan Raker, of Toledo. Ohio, No. 1and Marvin Dountz, of Columbus, Ohio,No. 1A. Then for over 2 hours everyminute two more riders were checkedout and on their way with every fourthone a side car. It was a swell morningand everyone was anxious to get going.A good crowd of Lansing people andwell-wishers were on hand at the StateJournal Building to see them off. Thefirst known check was Bannister on goodroad and open territory but they did nothave to wait long to know the Jack Pinewas on because five miles out of thischeck the markers said RIGHT and thatmeant right into the brush and with twosecret checks thrown in to make it in-teresting before emerging to go intoMerritt. This was a good indication asto what they had in store for them—noone made either of these secrets on time. Some good dirt roads put most of theboys back on schedule and even someover at the next secret just off goodroads. Then down a clearing that hadbeen dug up by bull-dozers where a pipeline had gone through leaving as rougha trail as you will find. A deep ditchcrossing did not help matters either, especially after the bottom got soupyand the machines began to pile up wait-ing their turn to cross. This cost mosteverybody points at the next known,Sanford. Only 10 riders made it on time.On to Estey with more trail and an oldR.R. grade and then right into the JackPines with no let-up until they brokeout onto a few miles of good road goinginto noon control at Standish. The pacewas beginning to show now and it wasfound that 90 contestants did not checkout for one reason or another. Two secret checks took care of any-one that chose the short way into nightcontrol. Only three riders checked in toWest Branch on time but they weremighty glad to get in late or early. Wehad planned to have everybody out ofthe woods before dark but with the raincame early darkness so some of the lateboys had added trouble. A good chickendinner served by the St. Johns LutheranChurch made everybody feel better andforget their troubles. Housing had beenarranged for and most of the boys turnedin early for a much needed rest. In orderto redraw for riding positions for thesecond day we had to determine whowas still in the running. It was foundthe 102 were eligible to go the secondday and by re-drawing it re-grouped thecontestants and they also had a new...15379
