Chicago: As the six strike-bound newspapers in this second largest city in the country were completing their second week of publication without printers, keen speculation centered on the production methods brought into play to bypass the idle Linotype machines. While the novelty of looking at seemingly typed news columns was wearing off for Chicago\'s three million readers, publishers throughout the nation were watching intently how the huge plants here were managing to keep rolling without what is normally considered the heart of the publishing trade. For, although issuing printed matter by means of photo-engraving, or offset lithography, is hardly new to the trade, this was its first full-dress test on a major scale under the constant pressure of rigid deadlines. To learn more of these new techniques, emerging through trial and error in the hothouse of necessity, follow along with us on a pictorial tour from city desk to newsstand, of The Chicago Daily News, a typical daily here meeting the challenge. This full-stocked case of \"fototype\" contains complete sets of letters of diverse size and face styles, each printed on individual squares of heavy paper. To set headlines, the fototype operator uses a \"stick\" similar to those employed by printers. After the letters are assembled to spell out the words, they will be glued into place and moved along to the art department. Here they will be pasted over the news story they describe by staff artists. Photo measures 9 x 7 inches. Photo is dated 12-03-1947. PHOTO FRONT
