From an Estate Sale of late 19th-early 20th century CRYSTAL & CHINA, we offer an item decorated by Master Silversmith FRIEDRICH DEUSCH in his studio located in LORCH, WURTTEMBERG, SWABISCH GMUND, GERMANY, using a vase blank supplied by the highly regarded \"ZEH SCHERZER\" porcelain manufactory.

This sale is for a GORGEOUS 1946-1949 6 1/2\"\" high by 4 3/4\" wide VASE with a HAND ENAMELED DESIGN of GEOMETRICS, CARTOUCHES OF HEARTS, LEAVES & FLOWERS, AND, DASHES & DOTS, ON A YELLOW AND BLUE BACKGROUND. WITH HEAVY PURE SILVER OVERLAY FRAMING AND OUTLINING OBJECTS AND FILLING 5 HORIZONTAL BANDS GOING AROUND. Marked on the underside with the Hallmark of a handled coffee pot & \"DeuscH\". Also, marked \"Handgemalt\"(hand painted) over the Hallmark and \"PURE SILVER\"(1000/1000) under the hallmark. In addition, green porcelain factory stamp of \"LEH SCHERZER\" ,\"BAVARIA GETMANY\" AND \"U.S. ZONE\"(this narrows the dating of this vase to the 1946-1949 period when this mark was in use).

NOTES ON FRIEDRICH DEUSCH, LORCH, SWABISCH GMUND, AND THE GERMAN SILVER OVERLAY PROCESS:

FRIEDRICH DEUSCH WAS A MASTER SILVERSMITH AND IN 1895 HE ESTABLISHED HIS FIRST SILVER WORKSHOP/STUDIO IN SCHWABISCH GMUND, A SMALL TOWN IN THE BADEN- WURTTEMBERG STATE, NEAR THE LARGE CITY OF STUTTGART. PREVIOUSLY, HE HAD RESEARCHED AND EXPERIMENTED WITH VARIOUS SILVER DECORATING TECHNIQUES AND WOUND UP INVENTING AND PATENTING(in 1895) THE GERMAN BENCHMARK SILVER OVERLAY PROCESS.

USING HIS OWN DESIGNS HE CREATED STUNNING WARES USING HAND ENAMELING AND SILVER OVERLAYS ON PORCELAIN OR CRYSTAL BLANKS. HE PURCHASED HIS PORCELAIN BLANKS FROM HIGH QUALITY MANUFACTORIES SUCH AS THOMAS, ROSENTHAL, HUTSCHENREUTHER, ZEG SCHERZER, JAEGER, ALKA, KPM BAVARIA, ET ALL.

IN 1913 HE EXHIBITED HIS ENAMEL AND SILVER OVERLAY PIECES AT THE WORLD EXHIBITION IN BORDEAUX, FRANCE, WINNING A SILVER MEDAL. SUBSEQUENTLY, HE WON THE GOLD METAL AT THE 1913 WORLD EXHIBITION IN GHENT, BELGIUM. OTHER MASTER SILVERSMITHS IN THE SCHWABISCH GMUND/STUTTGART AREA SUCH AS \"VEYHL\" & \"SPAHR\" ARE SAID TO HAVE LEARNED THE SILVER OVERLAY PROCESS BY WORKING AT DEUSCH\'S SHOP.

ACCORDING TO RONTGEN\'S BOOK REFERENCED BELOW, DEUSCH\'S DECORATING SHOP/STUDIO WAS LOCATED IN LORCH, WURTTEMBERG(about 1/4 the size of Schwabisch Gmund), A SMALL TOWN ABOUT 5 MILES FROM HIS STATED FIRST SHOP IN SCHWABISCH GMUND. COULDN\'T FIND ANY INFORMATION AS TO WHEN HE MOVED HIS SHOP FROM SCHWABISCH GMUND TO LORCH, HOWEVER, SINCE WE STRONGLY BELIEVE THAT THIS VASE WAS PURCHASED IN LORCH(see History/Provenance below), WE HAVE TO AGREE THAT DEUSCH MOVED HIS SHOP TO LORCH SOMETIME PRIOR TO 1946.

BACKGROUND & PROVENANCE OF THIS VASE:

My father\'s family\'s home town was Lorch, Wurttemberg - the same town that Friedrich Deusch is stated to have his workshop. All the children emigrated to the U.S. during the 1920\'s(my Aunt\'s & Uncle\'s) and became U.S. citizens. After the war my Aunt Pauline made quite a few trips back to her home town to visit with family members that were still there. On one of those visits she brought back to America the vase in this sale and the larger vase listed in another of our sales - these were gifted to my Mom and Dad and subsequently wound up in my family.

Since my wife and I have downsized 2 times over the years and we now have an apartment in our daughter\'s and son-in-law\'s house, all the lovely German display items(incl Hummel\'s) need to find a new home. Note that this vase does not have a Made in Germany mark since this was only required on export items, and, this was purchased domestically and brought over here.

EXPORT/DISTRIBUTION OF DEUSCH SILVER OVERLAY ITEMS:

IN SEARCHING THROUGH 15 YEARS OF DEUSCH SALES ON & WORTHPOINT AND CURRENT OFFERS FOR SALE ON , WE NOTICED THAT ALMOST ALL OF THESE WERE FOR ITEMS LOCATED IN GERMANY(of the 17 porcelain items with the Deutsch mark currently offered for sale on , 16 are located in Germany - further, 10 of the 17 have a porcelain factory export mark)? ALSO, FOR THE DEUSCH VASES SHOWN ON \'S & WORTHPOINT\'S SALE HISTORIES, ONLY A FEW ITEMS WERE LOCATED IN AMERICA, AND, MOST ALL THESE WERE SOLD BY LARGE U.S. sale COMPANIES - MEANING THAT THEY COULD HAVE BEEN CONSIGNED FROM GERMANY OR COULD HAVE BEEN CONSIGNED BY AN AMERICAN COLLECTOR OF DEUSCH WARES THAT WERE PURCHASED IN GERMANY AND BROUGHT OVER TO AMERICA?

IT IS WELL KNOWN THAT EUROPEAN MAKERS OF CHINA AND GLASS EXPORTED MOST OF THEIR WARES TO AMERICA BECAUSE OF THIS COUNTRY\'S INSATIABLE APPETITE AND DEEP POCKETS FOR EUROPEAN DECORATIVE COLLECTIBLES. AS SUCH, WHY THEN ARE MOST ALL DEUSCH ITEMS IN THE MARKETPLACE LOCATED IN GERMANY?

THIS QUESTION BUGGED ME UNTIL I REALIZED THAT NOT A SINGLE ITEM CARRYING JUST A DEUSCH MARK AND NOT THIS MARK PLUS THE PORCELAIN FACTORY MARK, WERE MARKED FOR EXPORT(COUNTRY NAME WAS MISSING FROM MARK). THE ONLY DEUSCH DECORATED ITEMS BEARING THE \"GERMANY\" STAMP WERE THOSE ALSO HAVING THE PORCELAIN MANUFACTORY NAME, i.e., WHERE THIS HALLMARK INCLUDED THE \"GERMANY\" DESIGNATION. HOW CAN WE EXPLAIN AWAY THIS ANALOMY?

MANY DECORATING COMPANIES THAT PURCHASED THE BLANKS THEY NEEDED FROM PORCELAIN MANUFACTORIES, PREFERRED THAT THESE WERE DELIVERED WITHOUT A FACTORY MARK - THEY WANTED THEY BUYER TO SEE ONLY THEIR MARK ON THE DECORATED PRODUCT AND NOT FOR THE ITEM TO HAVE ADDITIONAL FACTORY MARKS WHICH COULD BE LARGER OR FANCIER THAN THE DECORATOR\'S MARK. MOST FACTORIES ACCOMMODATED THE WISHES OF THE DECORATING SHOP. HOWEVER, IF THE ORDER FOR BLANKS WAS SMALL AND THEY HAD A LARGE INVENTORY OF UNDECORATED WHITEWARE HAVING THE FACTORY EXPORT MARK, THEN THE DECORATOR WOULD PROBABLY GET THESE MARKED BLANKS.

NOW, THE PLOT THICKENS, IN THAT DEUSCH\'S DECORATING SHOP WOULD APPLY ENAMELING AND SILVER OVERLAYS TO BLANKS THAT ALREADY HAD A FACTORY HALLMARK THAT FACILITATED EXPORTATION. WHEN THE DECORATING WAS COMPLETE DEUSCH WOULD ADD HIS MARK TO THE FINISHED PRODUCT. HERE IS THE MOST IMPORTANT POINT: JUST BECAUSE THE ITEM WAS MARKED FOR EXPORT, DOESN\'T MEAN THAT IT WAS EVER EXPORTED. WITNESS THE FACT THAT THE LARGE DEUSCH VASE LISTED IN ANOTHER OF OUR sales HAS THE FACTORY EXPORT MARK BUT, IT WAS WITHOUT A DOUBT NEVER EXPORTED BUT PURCHASED IN DEUSCH\'S LORCH SHOP AND CARRIED BACK TO THE U.S.(see above section on history and provenance).

AND, AS FURTHER WITNESS WE HAVE 10 DEUSCH ITEMS WITH A FACTORY EXPORT MARK SHOWN UNDER \'S CURRENT OFFERS FOR SALE, THAT ARE LOCATED IN GERMANY(which means that they have not as yet been exported even though they were made many years ago). ALSO, IF SOMEONE IN AMERICA BOUGHT ONE OF THESE ITEMS BEING OFFERED AND HAD IT SHIPPED TO THEIR ADDRESS, IT STILL WOULD NOT BE CONSIDERED A DEUSCH EXPORT ITEM SINCE AN EXPORTER REQUIRES AN IMPORTER AND THAT THE DEUSCH COMPANY WAS NOT THE SHIPPER, RATHER A NON-EXPORTER ENTITY SHIPPED THE ITEM.

LONG EXPLANATION BUT THE BOTTOM LINE IS THAT WE ARE FAIRLY CERTAIN THAT FRIEDRICH DEUSCH NEVER EXPORTED ANY OF HIS WARES TO AMERICA, AND THEREFORE, ANY THAT APPEAR ON THE U.S. MARKETPLACE MUST BE CONSIDERED SCARCE.

CONDITION: this 55-75 YEAR OLD vase is in EXCELLENT CONDITION without any cracks, chips, nicks or staining. Never used - only displayed, polished & transported to new homes. THERE IS A LITTLE AGE RELATED WEAR/DARKENING TO A FEW AREAS OF THE SILVER OVERLAY(check photos 6, 8 & 9).

PRICING GUIDELINES: Can\'t really use Worthpoint as a guide since their sale prices do not include shipping cost and shipping from Germany costs $50-$75(see quotes on offers for sale coming from Germany). The best guide is to use the offers for sale for they include shipping costs.

Very scarce item since only a few of Friedrich Deusch\'s masterpieces wound up in America(note that out of the 17 Deusch vases currently offered for sale on , only one is located in America!!), and even more so since this Deusch decoration is found on a Zeh Scherzer blank. Hard to find combination since none were sold over the past 15 years - however, there is one Deusch/Scherzer vase(21\" high as opposed to the 6 1/2\" of our vase) currently offered for sale on for $422, including shipping!!
