1942 LONGINES Cal 21.29 Marine Ship Chronometer in Mahogany Box - Running Strong:
$1200.00

Up for sale is a year1942LONGINES Swiss madeMarine Navigational Chronometer with 2-tier mahogany wood box, brass Gimbal Suspension Ring. The clock is in good working condition, with minor scuffs, scratches and signs of wear on the clock case, the movement, the dial and box.

Only the Longines clock, gimbal ring, and wooden box are included in this sale, as shown in the photos.

The clock runs strong and continuously for approximately 36 hours after a full wind-up.The movemement is engraved with Longines serial number 6402985, which indicates a manufacture date of 1942.
The clock features the high quality Longines caliber 21.29, 17 jewel movement, which was well known for its timekeeping accuracy and excellent suitability for marine navigational timekeeping. This 82 year old clock movement appears to be in very good cosmetic and working condition. The movement is complete and appears to be in very good condition. There are some scratches, residue and other signs of use or wear. See photos of clock interior and mechanism.
The clock is in good running condition, and is currently keeping time. However, a test for timing accuracy has not been performed. Accuracy andfuture clock operation are not guaranteed. Prior service history is unknown.

The clock dial is in good to fair condition for its age, with some scratches, light smudges, and spots of patina (see close-up photos of dial). There is some perimeter scrape wear on the extreme outer edge of the dial where the bezel ring clamps down upon the dial. This wear is common, and is out of view when the clock lid is in place. (See photos).

All 4 clock hands are present, straight, and are in good cosmetic condition.

The clock winding stem works as expected, and the mainspring does not “slip” when winding. Mainspring has excellent power capacity, and runs the clock for 36 hours.

The winding stem also serves as the time setting knob, similar to setting time on a wristwatch. The time setting feature has been tested and is working well.

The beveled clock glass is in good condition and has no significant scratches, or chips, or cracks.

The bezel ring has some scratches and spots of oxidation which are apparent in the photos.

The Brass Chronometer Case Tub has and Gimbal Ring are in good to fair condition, with some scratches, oxidation and dirt. (see photos)

The movement is protected by an inner beveled round glass disc that allows direct viewing of the movement without opening the compartment. The glass is in good condition with no chips, cracks or scuffs.

Note that the bottom of the weighted brass clock tub has hand made engravings, perhaps associated with a vessel ID or other identifying code. See photo showing underside of clock tub and engravings. The weighted bottom of the tub is of the screw-on type, and it is slightly diddicult to screw and unscrew that bottom section. I do not see ant stripped or crossed screw threads. A dirty thread track may be the cause of the resistance while turning.

The chronometer\'s UP - DOWN winding power reserve indicator hand and its driving mechanism are working properly.

The Up - Down indicator was used as follows: When in service aboard a ship, these marine chronometers were always wound every day, and at the same time each day, to ensure maximum timekeeping accuracy. It is the first 24 hours of operation after a full winding of the clock that isosynchronism (stable timekeeping rate) is best achieved. After 24 hours there is sometimes a slight drop-off in accuracy as the mainspring winds down from 24 to 48 hours. The Up - Down indicator was used as a visual verification that the chronometer had indeed been wound-up again for that day, and consistently for every day. If the hand passes the 24 hour mark, then it is time to wind up the chronometer again (even though it would continue running with lesser but still acceptable levels of accuracy).

The 2-tier mahogany box has some scratches and minor spots with loss of lacquer finish.

The box lid hinge is functioning as expected. There are 2 wood screws that are missing from one of the metal hinge flaps.See photos showing lower hinge flap with only 2 of the 4 brass screws present.

The box front has a latch with a key hole, but no key is present. Latch functionality is unknown. The box is unlatched, and the box can be opened at will.

The brass gimbal ring, its support screws and nuts are all present and are functioning as expected. There is patina, scratch marks and accumulated dirt. See photos.

The swiveling gimbal mount locking arm is present and is working properly.

The wooden box measures approximately 6.0 inches inwidth and depth, and 3.9 inches in height.

Although the clock is currently functioning well and keeping reasonably good time, I cannot guarantee continued future operation or timing performance as all of the parts inside the clock are over 80 years old.

Only the Chronometer clock, gimbal suspension ring, and Mahogany 2-tier box are included in this sale. No other items are included.

The clock will be double-boxed with plenty of protective cushioning, with tracking and insurance for safe delivery. I\'ve shipped over 20 of these chronometers with 100% arriving safely and in undamaged condition.
