The craft is a magnificent branch of the Arts dating to when the City came into the hands of the Mughal Empire in India. Visakhapatnam is widely know as India\'s \'City of the Destiny Jewel\' located on the east coast and has the largest natural harbor in the Country.
MOTHER OF PEARL vs. ABALONE
MOTHER OF PEARL is much more common and affordable than Abalone. It is found in a wide variety of marine and freshwater shellfish. It almost always come in a milky white color with a beautiful glistening light pinkish pearl tones.
ABALONE(ab-ah-LOW-nee)- AVERY RARE & HARD TO COME BY MOLLUSK--IS HARVESTED FROM A MARINE SHELL SPECIES OF GASTROPODS.ABALONE MOLLUSK ARE VERY, VERY EXPENSIVE--IN HIGH DEMAND, ESPECIALLY IN ASIA (and the West Coast of the US) DUE TO OVER-FISHING. THE EDIBLE INSIDE IS ALSO A VERY, VERY TASTY& Much enjoyed DELICACY. THE SHELL ISear-shaped AND ALWAYS COME IN DARK RICH RAINBOW COLORS. ABALONE SHELLS are mainly used in jewelry, decorative art pieces, usually as INLAYS AS SEEN IN THIS BOX-and musical instruments.

ABOUT THE BOX

The piece was gifted to my late husband in the late 1990s by a long-time patient (via her daughter) to be given at her death along with a short note. The patient, who was age 95 when she passed, lived inVisakhapatnam, India over 15-20 years.

*The Date this piece was made is based on the time period the donor lived in Visakhapatnam.
