A PICTURE OF THE NEW 74 PASSENGER CLIPPER OF PAN-AMERICAN AIRWAYS LANDED TODAY AT THE "PORT OF THE TRADE WINDS" ON TREASURE ISLAND AFTER FLIGHT FROM ASTORIA, OREGON. THE CLIPPER IS TO BE USED IN THE SAN FRANCISCO TO HONG KONG SERVICE. BASED HERE AT TREASURE ISLAND. TAKEN JANUARY 28, 1939.
This specific aircraft (NC 18602) was caught short by the Japanese bombing of Pearl harbor (as well as Midway and Wake Islands) and found itself in the unique position of being one of the most valuable assets in the world with no way home. As a result she was flown from New Zealand back to New York via Australia, Indonesia, Malaysia, Ceylon, India, Middle East, Africa and South America. A feat never attempted before navigated initially by school atlases and dead-recogning and under threat of being intercepted by Japanese fighter planes and anti-aircraft (she was shot at by a Japanese Submarine in the Indian Ocean). She subsequently became the fist airliner ever to fly all the way around the world. This is re-counted in the book "The Long way Home" by Ed Dover.
