1938 UNIVERSITY OF OREGON YEARBOOK, OREGENA, EUGENE, OREGON. The year of the Tall Firs Championship Basketball Team. The Tall Firs was the nickname for the Oregon Ducks Basketball Team, originally the name was coined by Oregon Sports Columnist, L.H Gregory in March 1938. The Oregon Team used a distinct size advantage to overpower their tournament opposition to claim both the Pacific Coast Conference and inaugural NCAA Men\'s Basketball Championship, which was won by Oregon in a 46-33 victory over Ohio State on March 27, 1939. The game was played on the campus of Northwestern University, in Chicago before a crowd of 5,000 spectators. Back in Eugene the citizenry were listening to championship on the local radio stations took to the streets, honking car horns and commencing an impromptu rally at the intersection of Willamette and Broadway. Two days thousands flocked to the train station upon the Tall Firs arrival. the embraced the victorious Webfoots who brought home the University of Oregon\'s first national championship in any sport.The pictures of the basketball players shown here were the nucleus of that Championship Team. Photo # 7 shows King\", Dave Silver, one of the members of the Tall Firs. Photo # 8 shows the Court Championship Northwest\'s basketball championship who beat California and Stanford Tall Firs Team Members: Coach Hobson talking to the team. Front row, left to right shows Gale Smith, Ted Sarpola, Wally Johansen, Bobby Anet, Matt Pavalunas and Ford Mullen, The Top Row shows: left to right: John Dick, Dave Silver, Ray Jewel, Urgel Wintermute, Laddie Gale and Bob Handy. Photo # 9 shows Webfoot, Laddie Gale, standing over Washington player, Bob Reese. Photo # 10 shows Laddie Gale, who was the scoring champion of 1938 with 243 points. Photo # 11 shows the Championship Baseball Team of the Northwest. In the front row, left to right are: John Thomas, Fred Mullen, Bill Courtney, Jim Nicholson, Ralph Amato, Jack Colman, Cliff McLean and Jack Gordon. In the top are: LeRoy Mattingly, Gale Smith, John Lewis, Robert Hardy, Bill Sayles, Andy Hurney, Bill Marshall and Earl Repp, manager. Photo # 12 shows Colonel Bill, Oregon\'s track coach for 35 years, Coach Bill Hayward. Photo # 13 gives the acknowledgements to the all the people and businesses\' that helped the 1938 Oregon Yearbook. Photos 14 thru 19 show some snap shots of the day. Photo # 20 shows an advertisement for Pendleton Shirts with fishing casting champion, Tony Accetti, who would later become famous for producing fishing lures. The last photo shows an advertisement for Kaufman Brothers Fashion Store. Shelf # 60.
