The 1938 Gum, Inc. Horrors of War R69 set consists of 288 cards, each measuring 2-1/2" by 3-1/8". The set is considered the most popular and sought-after non-sport cards ever produced. Originally developed as a 240 card set about The Second Sino-Japanese War, The Second Italo-Ethiopian War and The Spanish Civil War, the company added a second series of 48 cards illustrating the rise of Adolf Hitler, Nazi Germany and the beginnings of World War II. Each card front exhibits full-color lithography artwork – with incredibly violent and intense graphics depicting the unspeakable ravages of conflict and other war settings, with detailed text on the reverse. The final 36 cards in the set (high numbers 252-288) were not as actively collected during their initial release and as a result are the scarcer Horrors of War offerings.

This set is near complete missing 25 cards, the following numbers: 150, 195, 198, 200, 205, 207, 209, 219, 221, 224, 226, 227, 230, 235, 240, 277 and 281-288
