1935 Short Snorter Bill signed by Herbert Hoover, Pat O\'Brien, Jimmy Dodd, more:
$475.00

This is a Series 1935A Silver Certificate one dollar bill used as keepsake \"Short Snorter\". These were bills signed by acquaintances primarily on airplane flights, especially transatlantic.I\'ve had this Short Snorter of my grandfathers (Orlo W. Bond) for many years now. He\'s been gone for decades, and I never got the chance to ask him details about this bill. He worked for Standard Oil Co. in India and lived in Pakistan during the 1930\'s until the India - Pakistan partition in 1947. My mother and 2 aunts were born in Karachi in the early 1930\'s. He traveled back and forth between India, London, and the U.S. many times via transatlantic flights and steam ships, including during WWII.

This is inscribed on the back in my grandfather’s handwriting \"Short Snorter Karachi Chota Snorter 6/17/42\". Chota seems to mean \"littler, smaller, younger, etc\" and I would assume the 1942 date was when he started this.

The front of the bill has about 12 signatures, most of which are easy to read. The most well know person who signed here was Herbert Hoover, who was U.S. President from 1929-33. I have no idea where my grandfather met him. The Herbert Hoover Library in West Branch, Iowa told me this appears genuine, and it does match many other examples.

The other notable signers were Hollywood stars Pat Obrien, Betty Yeaton, Ruth Carrell (wife of Jimmie Dodd), and Jimmie Dodd (Mouseketeer). They were part of the USO tour in late 1944 that went to the India - Burma - China area. I am guessing my grandfather met them in India or traveling with them at that time. Jinx Falkenberg and Harry Brown were on the tour as well, but I cannot find their names here. There are 5 others on front I cannot determine. There is a \"Dick Hattrup\" who I found mention of online that was an engineer in India at the time. There is a \"Neil Sullivan\" who I found was an educator and civil rights advocate. I searched him online, and mailed a letter to his elderly son, who replied that was indeed his father\'s signature.

The signatures on the back of the bill are a total mystery. I believe there are 10 of them, but most are faded, and I\'ve not deciphered any (yet). Some of the names appear to say Bing Boyer, C.R. McBain, R.N. Russell, but I can\'t be sure, and found no one online with thesenames.

The bill is in fair condition, with folds, stains and wrinkles, as it was probably carried in a billfold for many years.

It\'s in a clear plastic bill holder, and will be padded and packed well for shipping.

Thanks for your interest!
