An annual event that would usually open in late November,Chicago’sInternational Live Stock Expositionwas the largest such show in the world.Competing for valuable cash prizes were cattle, sheep, swine, and draft horses that had previously won top honors at state and regional fairs. In addition to the livestock judging contests, there was an evening horse show, agricultural displays and exhibits, special 4-H displays and events, etc.The Exposition was held in Chicago’sInternational Amphitheatrelocated next to theUnion Stock Yard. During its 7-day run, theExposition would typically attract an audience of 450,000 or more people. After the Stock Yard closed in 1971, the “International” moved to Louisville, Kentucky, where it continues to this day.

In addition to the local Chicago newspapers, nearly every important farm paper in the United States and Canada, the major wire services, and many of the country’s leading dailies sent feature writers and staff correspondents to cover theInternational Live Stock Exposition.As many as 100 reporters used the International Amphitheater’s press room to report on the major livestock judging events, to conduct interviews with distinguished judges, exhibitors and visitors, and to provide written descriptions of the exhibits and special events.
