This week I\'m offering a number of old non-sport cards from various vintage sets. In 1933, National Chicle decided to compete with Goudy Gum\'s hugely successful Indians card set, by issuing a set devoted to a national obsession - aviation. Flying a plane was still an exciting novelty, and famous aviators enjoyed the same fascination with the public that movie stars and professional athletes did. National Chicle, which issued a distinctive baseball card set a year later, created a beautifully-illustrated set of 108 cards, showcasing the men (and women) who were nationally famous for flying, many of them heroes of the First World War. These colorful cards were painted in an eye-catching \"Art Deco\" style and remain incredibly popular with collectors today. The first series of 48 cards contained many of the most famous aviators, and a second series (advertised as totalling 144 cards but actually bringing the numbering only up to 108) is somewhat tougher to find.This is card #44, picturing Admiral William A. Moffett. It shows some corner wear but is otherwise nice (see scans for condition); it\'s in nice shape for a card that\'s over eighty years old. Note that cards #25 to #48 were originally printed with the notation \"This is a series of 48 cards\" on the back, and were later printed with the number changed to \"144.\" The latter designation is tougher to find. This card is a \"series of 144\" card.
