Friedrich Max Trautz (1877-1952) was a German Army officer, scholar and Japanologist. He worked at the Ethnological Museum in Berlin and was instrumental in promoting the academic study of Japanese history and culture. In 1926, he became the German director of the Japan Institute in Berlin. He continued his research in Kyoto and became the first director of the German Research Institute in Japan in 1934.
