It was located near the beach, next to the Playland amusement park, The place was very popular attracting crowds every night.However, Topsy’s Roost was also a racist and offensive establishment, that used the name and image of Topsy, a Black character from the novel “Uncle Tom’s Cabin”, to market their restaurant. The name Topsy was a derogatory term for Black people, and the character was portrayed as a stereotypical slave girl who was ignorant and mischievous.
