This item isin decent vintage condition considering its age.  This piece dates back to about the 1930s.  It is signed as J. Ruhl.  Ruhl was a highly talented sculptor who did freelance work for some of the most well respected metal art works companies in the early 1900\'s.  It appears to be missing a small piece, please view last photo with red circle.  It has much paint wear which gives this piece a wonderful look!  It is made of a very heavy metal and sits on a marble base, weighing over 4 pounds!  It is a single bookend though sits well on its own as a statue.  A very unique find for sure!  Here\'s some interesting history of the artist!

History of the Artist:

\"Between 1905 and 1920, Ruhl was employed by Piccirilli Brothers. During this period he was involved in creating the marble lions in front of the New York Public Library Main Branch and the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C.

Collectors of antique bookends are familiar with Ruhl\'s work. Ruhl\'s involvement in creating bookends began in 1915 and continued until his death in 1940. Most of his work was for J.B. Hirsch and Armor Bronze. Some work was also done for K&O (Kronheim and Oldenbusch).

Ruhl also sculpted the Indian head, Chief Obbatinewat, the floor seal for the Shawmut Bank of Boston. In April 1894, he created a death mask of David Dudley Field, an American lawyer.[2]\"
