Interesting scrap book and photo album from Iowa during the years 1929 to about 1937. There are the normal photos of friends and family, but also some photos and ephemera regarding the historically interesting Iowa town baseball leagues. One of the family members appears to have been part of the Tripoli team in the Cedar Valley League. There are some team photos and a 1937 schedule. There are also some very interesting notes regarding the "colored team" and players and two notes from a native American coach or player discussing conditions and payment for his team to play a game with the Tripoli team. They are signed Chief Wasekuk. I have learned that the good Native American players were often referred to as "Chief". I have also learned that town team baseball was extremely popular and important in Iowa. There is a long history regarding this subject going back to just after the Civil War.
The individual and family in this scrapbook were from Bremer County, Iowa but I haven't determined exactly which town. The baseball team was from Tripoli, but many towns are mentioned. There are many photos from Cedar Falls and the Iowa State Teacher's College there. The Teacher's College is now the University of Northern Iowa. Looks like they had a flood in the Cedar Falls area that year. There are photos of The Grotto of the Redemption, a famous landmark that was fairly new at that time but remains a destination today. There are articles from local newspapers with news items from the town including who went to who's house for dinner. Lots of old autos in the photos and kids at a may pole.
The scrapbook measures 8.5" x 11". It is an inch thick. There are some blank pages at the back. Just a few pages have some photos removed. Many of the photos have names or description written in white ink on the black page. Some of the photos have information on the back but many are completely glued down.
