1928 Jefferson High School Year Book, Jefferson, Oregon located in Marion County. Marion county was originally named the Champooick District, meaning a meeting place on the Willamette River. In 1849 the territorial legislature renamed the county to Marion in honor of Francis Marion, or the Silver Fox, a Continental Army General from South Carolina who served in the American Revolutionary War.
