Palermois abarrioor neighborhood ofBuenos Aires,Argentina. It is located in the north of the city, near theRio de la Plata.

It has a total land area of 17.4km2and a population of 256,927. It is the onlybarriowithin the administrative division ofComuna 14.

Palermo is perhaps best known as thepolocapital of the world. Each year, in November, the city hosts theArgentine Polo Open, commonly known as thePalermo Open.

History

The name of the area is derived from the still-existingFranciscanabbeyof "Saint Benedict of Palermo", an alternative name forSaint Benedict the Moor. Saint Benedict the Moor lived from 1526 to 1589 and is a complementary patron saint ofPalermo, the capital city ofSicily.

In an alternative history of the name, a folk story supported by journalists, the land would have been originally purchased by anItalian immigrantnamedJuan Domingo Palermoin the late 16th century, shortly after the foundation of Buenos Aires in 1580.Juan Manuel de Rosasbuilt a country residence there which was confiscated after his fall in 1852.

The area grew rapidly during the last third of the 19th century, particularly during the presidency ofDomingo Faustino Sarmiento, who was responsible for the creation of theBuenos Aires Zoological Gardensand theParque Tres de Febreroin 1874, andPlaza Italiaand thePalermo Race Trackin 1876, all on the grounds of what had been Rosas' pleasure villa.

During the 20th century, theBuenos Aires Botanical Gardens(1902),Jorge Newbery Airport(1948), the water purification plant, several sport clubs, theGalileo Galilei planetarium(1966), and theBuenos Aires Japanese Gardens(1967) were developed.

Thomas Hitchcock(23 November 1860 – 29 September 1941) was one of the leading Americanpoloplayers during the latter part of the 19th century and aHall of Famehorse trainerand owner known as the father of Americansteeplechasehorse racing.

He was born on 23 November 1860 inWestbury, New York, to Thomas Hitchcock (1831–1910]and Marie Louise Center (1829–1913),the daughter of a New York merchant. His father had been involved in thenewspaperbusiness withCharles Anderson Dana.He was educated atBrasenose College, Oxford, where he won abluefor polo in 1883, playing in theUniversity polo teamalongside his friend,Douglas Haig, 1st Earl Haig, later Field Marshal Earl Haig. He graduated in 1884.

Career

Hitchcock was a key figure in developing the sport of polo in the United States. In 1877, he and his friendAugust Belmont Jr.were part of the group that organized the first polo match onLong Island,New York, played on the infield of the racetrack at theMineola, New York, Fair Grounds. One of the first 10-goal players in the U.S., Hitchcock's efforts resulted in the 1881 formation of Long Island'sMeadowbrook Polo Club. In 1886, he was a member of the United States team in the first international polo match that played for theWestchester Cup. A polo player herself, and the founder in the year 1916 of theAiken Preparatory School, Louise Eustis Hitchcock had her sons playing polo as soon as they were old enough to swing a mallet. She also helped family friendCornelius Vanderbilt Whitneyto learn the game. Thomas Hitchcock and his wife spent virtually every winter at their 3,000-acre (12km2) estate inAiken, South Carolinawhere in 1892 he founded thePalmetto Golf Club. At that time, the city served as a winter playground for many of the country's wealthiest families such theVanderbiltsand theWhitneys. Fond offox hunting, they also established the Aiken Hounds and in 1916 received official recognition from theMasters of Foxhounds Association of North America.
