This scarce cardis one in a series of 24 cards issued in Canada bythe Cowan Confectionery Company of Stirling Road Toronto Ontario Canada.One was insertedinto each package of their Cowan’s Chocolates. They are listedas V6 in Burdick’s American Card Catalogue, they are entitled “BIRD SERIES”. Although no guide that I am awareof gives a definite date of issue for this series it is generally assumed to have been in the 1920’s era The front of each card features a colorfulimage of the featured species andhas a coupon attached to the bottomwith the card number on it. This card is number 12 in the series and featuresa QUAIL. The card does have the artist signature W. R.Stark on the card. This artist did manyof the Cowans card series illustrations as well as a few other CanadianChocolate companies card series. The back of the card features a briefdescription of the bird, and has a premium offer from the Company. Customers could cut off the coupons from thebottom of the card and when they had numbers 1-24 complete they could mail themto Cowans in exchange for a 7 by 12 inch Bird Print. Because of this premium exchange offer fromthe company, finding these cards withthe coupons still attached isextremely tough. Most kids would havecut the coupons off and sent them away for the print (what kid would turn downfree stuff?) The back is in both theFrench and English Language. The Card measures 5 1/4 inches by 2 3/16 inchesapproximately. The card does have some creasing, but it has its coupon still attached. I have scanned the front and back of the card fairly large soyou can determine the condition for yourself. THESE CARDS WERE NEVER ISSUED INTHE U.S. or UK Due to the lower population in Canada than in the US andUK, print runs in Canada were much smaller compared with American and British Cards. (Because ofthis the majority of all Canadian non sports cards are far scarcer than cardsissued in the USA & UK.)
