ILLUSTRATOR/ARTIST:

Oliver Herford(2 December 1860 – 5 July 1935) was an Anglo-American writer, artist, and illustrator known for his pithybon motsand skewed sense of humor.

He was born inSheffield, Englandon 2 December 1860 to Rev. Brooke Herford and Hannah Hankinson Herford. Oliver\'s father, aUnitarianminister, moved the family to Chicago in 1876 and to Boston in 1882. Oliver attendedAntioch CollegeinYellow Springs, Ohio, from 1877 to 1879. Later he studied art at theSlade Schoolin London and theAcadémie Julienin Paris. Afterward, he moved to New York, where he lived until his death.

\"Herford, regarded as the AmericanOscar Wilde, was known for his wit\".His sisterBeatrice Herfordwas also a humorist, delivering comic monologues on stage.

To appeal to Christmas shoppers in 1902,Ethel MumfordandAddison Miznerpublished a small book, printed in San Francisco,The Cynic\'s Calendar of Revised Wisdom for 1903, featuring a barbed epigram or aphorism for each week of the year; they added Herford\'s name as an author, either as a spoof or to take advantage of his burgeoning notoriety, and to everyone\'s surprise the calendar was an astounding success. When Herford got wind of the story, he demanded 90% of the royalties. He was awarded an equal third, and annual incarnations of theCynic\'s Calendar, including contributions from Herford, continued to appear for the rest of the decade and beyond.

Herford\'s cartoons and humorous verses regularly enlivened publications including asLife,Woman\'s Home Companion,Ladies\' Home Journal,Century Magazine,Harper\'s Weekly,The Masses, The Mentor, andPunch. From the 1890s to the 1930s, Herford authored over 30 books, sometimes written in collaboration with others (notablyJohn Cecil Clay), and usually illustrated by himself. He also illustrated many books by other authors, includingJoel Chandler Harris,Carolyn Wells, andEdgar Lee Masters. His 1894 collaboration withGertrude Hall,Allegretto, was dedicated \"ToWolcott Balestier, These Verses anjd Pictures.\" Balestier had died in 1891 at the age of 29.

Herford was a longtime member of thePlayers Clubin New York City, where his wit became \"one of the traditions of Gramercy Park.\"He married Margaret Regan, an Englishwoman, in New York on May 26, 1905. They made their home at 182 East 18th Street for about thirty years. Herford died on July 5, 1935, and his wife died the following December.

From his obituary inThe New York Times:

\"His wit…was too original at first to go down with the very delectable highly respectable magazine editors of the Nineties. It was odd, unexpected, his own brand. It takes genius to write the best nonsense, which is often far more sensible than sense. Herford\'s, the result of care and polish, looked unforced.…Intelligent, thoughtful, well-bred, what with his animals and his children and his artistic simplicities, he was remote from the style of the best moderns. No violence, no obscenity, not even obscurity or that long-windedness which is the signet of the illustrious writer of today. An old-fashioned gentleman, a painstaking artist, whose work had edge, grace and distinction.\"

Sinn FéinEnglish:\"[We] Ourselves\")[is anIrish republicananddemocratic socialistpolitical party in both theRepublic of IrelandandNorthern Ireland.

Theoriginal Sinn Féin organisationwas founded in 1905 byArthur Griffith. Its members founded the revolutionaryIrish Republicand its parliament, theFirst Dáil, and many of them were active in theIrish War of Independence, during which the party was associated with theIrish Republican Army (1919–1922). The party split before theIrish Civil Warand again in its aftermath, giving rise to the two traditionally dominant parties of Irish politics:Fianna Fáil, andCumann na nGaedheal(which becameFine Gael). For several decades the remaining Sinn Féin organisation was small and often without parliamentary representation. It continued its association with theIrish Republican Army. Another split in 1970 at the start ofthe Troublesled to the modern Sinn Féin party, with the other faction eventually becoming theWorkers\' Party.

During theTroubles, Sinn Féin was associated with theProvisional Irish Republican Army. For most of that conflict, there were broadcasting bans on Sinn Féinin the IrishandBritish media. Although the party sat on local councils, it had a policy ofabstentionismfor the BritishHouse of Commonsand the IrishDáil Éireann, standing for election to those parliaments but pledging not to take their seats if elected. AfterGerry Adamsbecame party leader in 1983, electoral politics were prioritised increasingly. In 1986, the party dropped its abstentionist policy for the Dáil; some members formedRepublican Sinn Féinin protest. In the 1990s, Sinn Féin—under the leadership of Adams andMartin McGuinness—was involved in theNorthern Ireland peace process. This led to theGood Friday Agreementand created theNorthern Ireland Assembly, and saw Sinn Féin become part of thepower-sharingNorthern Ireland Executive. In 2006, it co-signed theSt Andrews Agreementand agreed to support thePolice Service of Northern Ireland.

Sinn Féin is the largest party in the Northern Ireland Assembly, having won the largest share of first-preference votes and the most seats in the2022 election, the first time anIrish nationalistparty has done so.Since 2024,Michelle O\'Neillhas served as the first ever Irish nationalistFirst Minister of Northern Ireland. From 2007 to 2022, Sinn Féin was the second-largest party in the Assembly, after theDemocratic Unionist Party(DUP), and its nominees served asdeputy First Ministerin the Northern Ireland Executive.

In the UKHouse of Commons, Sinn Féin holds seven of Northern Ireland\'s seats; there, it continues its abstentionist policy. InDáil Éireann, it is the joint-largest party and is the main opposition, having won the largest share of first-preference votes in the2020 election. The currentparty presidentisMary Lou McDonald, who succeeded Gerry Adams in 2018.
