$10.00

Up for offer in this sale is an Antique Letter from Mildred M. Rice of Wooster, Ohio to Private Glenn M. Smith with the 336th Aero Squadron in Long Island, N.Y.
It is on letterhead from Taylor & Etling; Attorneys-at-Law of Wooster, Ohio. James B. Taylor & Allen H. Etling. Rooms 1 to 4 of the Johnson & Taylor Block.Envelope is postmarked WOOSTER AUG 7 430PM 1918 OHIO. Addressed to Pvt. Glenn M. Smith, 336th Aero Squadron, Aviation Field #2, Hempstead, Long Island, N.Y.Text of letter is as follows:
August 7th, 1918.
My dear Glenn:-
Here I am, up to my old stunt of writing personal letters on the type-writer, but I know that you will pardon my departure from the strict laws of etiquet (sic), when I tell you that the thermometer registers ninety-three degrees in my office, and writing with a pen is almost impossible. This kind of weather suits Texas or Alabama, but certainly not good old Ohio.
Mother is getting along very well now. Yesterday I walked with her the whole length of the corridor at the hospital, and they think she will be able to come home tomorrow.
I believe you asked me about Jim Sullivan. He too went with the last draft. He and King are I suppose enjoying the beauties of South Carolina together. About every one has now departed from Wooster, at least the unmarried ones, and also some of the married. Ez Johnson did not have to go yet, although he is in Class 1, but they granted him a few months time, so they say, until Bess should be better. Don is in Class 2C on his Agricultural Claim. I think they have a new machine, for Lucile said she saw Don driving one.. Your old friends, the Lairds, are back to town, and are residing on our street, much to the enjoyment (?) of everyone near. They live right across the street from Hawks. Luneal corresponded with a fellow from Shreve by the name of Sterrit, when she was in Chicago with her sister Ruth, so the story goes, and she and Jennie came East and married him before he went to war. I\'ll wager to say that it is a good thing she got him by correspondence for that is the only way she would have gotten him. You know Arthur Hunsicker and I were always strong for these correspondence schools. Do you remember how he used to give a little yell, which was,
We\'re no dummies,We\'re no fools,Rah! Rah! Correspondence Schools.
Every time I think of correspondence schools I think of good old Gus. I wonder where he is now. He is in the Service some place.
Helen Zaring Davison is coming from Chicago to visit me next week. She and Billy, her son, will be here for the Big Wayne County Picnic, which is the 15th, and will stay a week. She thought she would see so many people that she knew at the Picnic. All of her relatives have moved away from Wooster, so she only has her friends to visit here. She expects to go on to Pittsburg to visit her husband\'s brother, then back to Columbus to visit her Aunt and then on home. I am anxious to see her.
I am enclosing a little snap (EDIT: this photo is not currently with the letter and is not part of this sale) which we took when we were at the Lake this summer. The girl between Ruth and I, is Mrs. Edgar Maurer, whose husband is a Lieutenant in France. The other two girls are friends of mine from Kansas City, Kans. I got an invitation yesterday to be the Maid of Honor at the wedding of the one on my left, but as she is to be married in Ocean City, N.J., I can not afford to go there. Her fiance is an Engineer stationed at Washington, D.C. This picture is very funny, I think. I look like a statue of some sort, but will send it anyway.
Will cease, for it is so hot, and I don\'t feel so well this morning. The Doctor says I need a complete rest, but that of course is impossible for I have been away from the office so much this summer. Wishing you a safe voyage, should this be the last letter you get before you sail, and every thing else that is nice, I remain
As ever,(signed) Mildred
