Please view pics carefully. There is tarnish, obviously, from age. It could be polished, but I did not want to interfere with the patina of the piece. The compass works, as can be viewed by the pics with the cover opened. The arrow is pointing north (from where I was sitting. Lol) in every pic, as the compass is photographed from different angles. It's a really neat piece! Unfortunately, it is missing the D-ring where a chain or lanyard would be attached. This was from an estate dispersal, and the original owner's name is lightly engraved on the bottom. It's difficult to see unless tilted to the light. Personally, I think it gives the piece character and adds a bit of "pride of ownership" to the history of the compass.
