1916-1929 YEMEN (ADEN STATE) RAILWAY BRONZE TRAIN PLATE / PLAQUE

Period: 1916-1929.

Materials: Bronze with wooden backing.

Dimensions: 395mm wide x 325mm long x 3-4mm thick / Wooden frame; 448mm wide x 404mm long.

Makers marks: Unmarked.

Condition: The plaque has been attached to a later wooden backing. Wear, rubbing and surface scratching. Some chips and dents to the edges, possibly from someone trying to remove it.

Notes: A very interesting early 20th century bronze Arabic train plaque. It came with a letter attached that says it was translated by a doctor from Kuwait. They said the plaque is written in old Arabic and reads "Yemen, Taymoor U Railway". Yemen does not have a railway. The British constructed one in 1916-1920, to support them in operations against the Ottoman forces. After completion it was transferred to civilian control as the Aden State Railway, but was closed in 1929.
