1913-1922 payphone vault door

In 1922 a different style of vault door appeared. It was not flat like this. The style offered here was common from 1912 to 1922. The first were cast. This one is steel.

I remember when in the 1950\'s, I would try to polish my Model A\'s grille shell/radiator shroud. It would wear through to the bare metal. I recall the bumper on my \'41 Chevy; it was chipping.

I do not know if this door was nickel plated or chrome plated. It needs painting and has a few small blemishes and dents.

A \"333\" is stamped into the metal; probably the location of the door for finding the matching key.

We can supply a lock if necessary.

Old3-Slot Payphone Door – 3-Slot payphones were made between 1912 and1972. So too the doors for them. The one shown here is AutomaticElectric and these were very alike from 1922 to 1972. The greatestshow of difference was from 1921 to some time during the 1930 –1940s. There wasn\'t much of a dimple / no dimple where the key goesin. But 1950s and 1960s doors had a distinct dimple there. Whetherwe know who made all of these that didn\'t have the dimple is notproven to me. Please tell me. Richard, you are the best at this, followed by Jim. The non-dimple type was seen in Western Electric –Gray (Gray – W.E.) 3-Slotters until the early 1930s (so from 1921or 1922 until around 1933). The same door was seen in payphones putout by Gray through the 1920, 1930, and 1940s although I know of nosource which would give cut off times when the dimple appeared. Itwouldn\'t surprise me if the dimple appeared in 1955 when other smallinsignificant outward changes occurred in Automatic Electric3-Slotters. Few colors were painted on payphones early on. A veryfew greens appeared. And then in 1955, all thunder broke loose withcolor variety. For some reason beige became popular! Everything gotpainted beige! Even the kitchen cupboards were beige! And likewisepayphones; and so the doors and the accessories. The only proof Ican find about chrome is a Ray Blaine article in 1963 Telephonysaying that Bell was gonna try chrome on payphones in Hawaii. Mydoor: I saw the transition and handled over 13,000 payphones from1979 to around 1996. I recall plainly going to a junk yard near LaCrosse, WI, hearing there were several hundred doors on a pile ofsteel there; and bought them for a dollar each then and there, about1981. I don\'t remember much about door acquisition after that exceptthere was fear we would run out, so we had them made in differentways – thin aluminum, thick aluminum, flat and curved edges; notvault – like the old ones. Now days to make them like originalswould probably cost $30 each or more and they always wanted 1,000commitments. We are in 2020 and 2021 moving out of a 300\' 4 –Story building back to “The Farm”; and need to make so much roomin our old dairy barn. That\'s where I encountered a few old doors;but not to get rid of them, as we would likely use them eventually. But since I sorted them somewhat, I\'d offer to do sort of a share. But locks are more difficult than doors, especially with keys. Weended up with some 10L locks absent keys. I don\'t know in / at3-2021 how many, if any are remaining. We would remove tumblers andthen try to find a key that would fit, and it would then work. Oldpayphone locks were seldom 100% - seems as if they\'d need oiled andmessed with, so prepare for a challenge when messing with them.
