Seaside Park in Bridgeport, CT is Bridgeport’s largest park, covering 325 acres. It has a varied landscape: baseball fields, oceanfront picnic areas, a ¾-mile stretch of sandy beach, pathways through groves of trees, and a lighthouse.
The park offers many amenities including a bathing beach, bath house, ball fields, picnic areas and hiking trails. The park was laid out just after the Civil War by Calvert Vaux and Frederick Law Olmsted, whose other efforts include Manhattan’s Central Park and Prospect Park in Brooklyn.
At the western end of the park is Fayerweather Island. Walkers can visit this natural wildlife preserve by crossing the breakwater rocks. The island’s lighthouse guided navigators into Black Rock Harbor from 1823 to 1932.In the year 1911, Seaside Park in Bridgeport, CT saw significant developments. The city acquired the water-bound area that comprises the west beach and Fayerweather Island.
This addition, along with landfill operations, increased the size of the park. The construction of a seawall also began in 1911 and was completed in 1919, connecting the island to the mainland. These changes were part of a series of enhancements to the park that took place between 1865 and 1920.
The evolution of the park over these years contributed to its listing on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982.
