This rare and colorful card is one in a series of 48 Cards issued by the John H. Dockman & Sons Companyof Baltimore M.D. entitled“ Military Pictures ” This series isdesignated as E5 in Burdick’sAmerican Card Catalogue. One card wasinserted with their products whichwere Candy , Caramels , and Chewing Gum and “Novelty Specialties” . Thecards mainly deal with what I believe to be countries involved in WW1. I have not been able to find a date of theirissue in any reference guide I have. However World War One began in 1914 and ran till 1918. This series does not include any cardsrepresenting the American Military which only joinedWorld War One in 1917 the year before it ended. So I believe that these cards were issued in the U.S. sometime between 1914 and 1917before the United States Of AmericaJoined the War Effort. Eachcard features a colorful portrait of some aspect of Military life at the time. The cards are scorednear the bottom, and were intendedto be bent back along that score line and usedas stand up paper toys. Because of this finding these cards withtheir bottom tabs still attached istough. Many kids would have folded them over and over again and most times when youfind these cards the tabs have torn off at the score mark from years ofuse. The back indicates that the cards are made tostand upright by turning back the scoredline at the base of the card. This card features a INFANTRY OFFICER FRANCE. The cardmeasures 2 ¾ inches by 1 ½approximately. This card has somelighter creasing. The card has also beenprinted off centre, with the back more so than the front. I have scannedthe front and back of the card fairly large so you can determine the conditionfor yourself.
