1910’s Arthur Pelkey cabinet card. Published by Sommer Studio of Philly. Sommer was a known baseball and boxing card maker. Cabinet is marked in pencil on the back “shot in Radnor.” The card was bought a few years back. The seller had a large handful of Luther McCarty items. I believe the seller said the items came from McCarty’s manager’s estate. The card was also represented as McCarty. I knew it wasn’t McCarty when I offer it, but I knew it was a good likliehood I would figure out the subject. The card has been in my working on it pole for awhile. I got a chance to put some good work in today on my boxing stuff. I don’t know how much of the original listing was ignorance, misguidance or disception. At any rate, this is obviously Pelkey. Pelkey held the White World Heavyweight title from 1913-14. The title existed in response to the dominance of Jack Johnson. Pelkey was one of the fighters known as the “White Hope.”Pelkey won the title from Luther McCarty in a second round death win. Pelkey did some prison time for the fight. Pelkey died less than 10 years after his title win. It is said he was never the same after the fight. I don’t know if that means he drank himself into oblivion. I wasn’t able to find the circumstances of Pelkey’s death. Card is about 5 by 8 inch in size. Stains, toning and wear. Creased corner. Pinhole. Feel free to ask questions.
