The Alaska–Yukon–Pacific Exposition, a world\'s fair held in Seattle in 1909, publicizing the development of the Pacific Northwest. It was originally planned for 1907 to mark the 10th anniversary of the Klondike Gold Rush, but the organizers learned that the New York and New Jersey Jamestown Exposition was being held that same year and rescheduled. An estimated 27 million visitors attended the 1893 Columbian Exposition held in Chicago, a marketing opportunity publishers seized by selling official souvenir postcards. Subsequent fairs in Buffalo (1901), St. Louis (1904), San Francisco (1915 PANAMA PACIFIC World\'s Fair), and San Diego (1916), as well as regional expositions, attest to the enduring connection between attending a fair and buying postcards. The Hudson–Fulton Celebration from September 25 to October 9, 1909, in New York and New Jersey was an elaborate commemoration of the 300th anniversary of Henry Hudson\'s discovery of the Hudson River and the 100th anniversary of Robert Fulton\'s first successful commercial application of the paddle steamer. The maritime achievements of Hudson and Fulton foreshadowed the importance of the river to New York\'s progress and identity. Organizers used the event not only to display the success of the two men but also the status of New York City as a world city and the achievements of its citizens. The Chicago \"Century of Progress International Exposition,\" also known as the Chicago World\'s Fair, was a World\'s Fair held in the city of Chicago, Illinois, United States, from 1933 to 1934 and celebrated the city\'s centennial. The theme of the fair was technological innovation, and its motto was \"Science Finds, Industry Applies, Man Adapts,\" trumpeting the message that science and American life were wedded. Its architectural symbol was the Sky Ride, a transporter bridge perpendicular to the shore on which one could ride from one side of the fair to the other. In 1933, the world was still mired in the malaise of the Great Depression, and the fair could give people a glimpse of a happier not-too-distant future, all driven by innovation in science and technology.
