On offer is a medal commemorating the participation of the women of Vienna in the 1905 Schiller Festival at Vienna, capital of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. The medal is of gilt bronze and is in estimated Extremely Fine condition.
The medal\'s obverse displays a portrait of Johann Christoph Friedrich von Schiller (1759-1805), head left. Among his many poetic, dramatic, and philosophical works, perhaps the most famous was the An die Freude (\"Ode to Joy\") which Beethoven set to music for the final movement of his Ninth Symphony.
The reverse displays a cherub bearing a flaming torch, followed by a lady in Classical Greek attire playing the lyre. The legend reads ZUR SCHILLER FEIER - 1905 - DIE FRAUEN WIEN, \"For the Schiller Festival - 1905 - The Women of Vienna\". The signature of the medallist, St. [Stephan] Schwartz, appears in the exergue.
The medal is based upon a larger example engraved by Schwartz in commemoration of the Schiller festival held at Vienna on the centenary of the writer\'s death in 1805.The item pictured is the exact item which will be received.
