Background: TheTrail of Tearswas a series offorceddisplacements of approximately 60,000Indigenouspeopleof the \"FiveCivilized Tribes\" between 1830and 1850 by theUnited Statesgovernment.Part of theIndianremoval, theethnic cleansingwasgradual, occurring over a period of nearly two decades.Members of theso-called \"Five Civilized (including thousandsof theirblack slaves)—wereforcibly removed from their ancestralhomelands in theSoutheastern UnitedStatesto areas to the west of theMississippi Riverthat hadbeendesignatedIndian Territory.The forced relocations were carriedout by government authorities after the passageof theIndian Removal Actin1830.TheCherokee removalin 1838 (the last forced removal eastof the Mississippi)was brought on by the discovery of gold nearDahlonega,Georgia, in 1828, resulting in theGeorgia Gold Rush.

The relocated peoples suffered from exposure, disease, andstarvation while En route to their newly designated
