Northwest Africa 16136(NWA 16136)

(Northwest Africa)

Purchased: 2023

Classification: Martian meteorite (Shergottite)

History: A single sample weighing 158 g was found in northwest Africa and subsequently sold to a meteorite dealer in the United States. Aerolite Meteorites purchased the stone in 2023.

Physical characteristics: Stone is light greenish-gray with a distinctive diabasic texture. Sample bears a striking external resemblance to Gadamis 001.

Petrography: Description and classification (A. Love,App) Sample shows diabasic texture composed of up to 1.2cm long twinned, zoned clinopyroxene laths and interstitial lath-shaped masses of maskelynite. Maskelynite also occurs as radiating bundles of smaller lath-shaped crystals, described by AJ Irving as sheafs. Rare symplectites occur at the grain boundaries. Additional minerals and phases are: Ti magnetite, ilmenite, pyrrhotite, a silica polymorph, mesostasis, merrillite and apatite.

Geochemistry: (A. Love,App) pigeonite cores(Fs30.5±1.4Wo14.0±2.8, Fe/Mn=29.0±1.4, Mg#=64.5±2.2 n=3); augite cores (Fs24.3±2.0Wo29.2±3.0, Fe/Mn=27.5±1.1 n=15); pigeonite rims (Fs57.3±14.0Wo15.7±2.0, Fe/Mn=35.0±3.5, Mg#=28.9±17.3, n=37); augite rims (Fs45.7±11.5Wo24.6±4.5, Fe/Mn=34.1±2.9, Mg#=39.8±12.8, n=23); Maskelynite (An49.9±5.0Or1.8±0.8, n=8).

Classification: Martian achondrite (Basaltic shergottite) Martian achondrite (Basaltic shergottite M-S4 low weathering) Based on textures and mineral compositions, sample is a basaltic shergottite.

Specimens: Elizabeth Vieira (Aerolite Meteorites) holds the main mass. A polished thin section a mount and 2 slices weighing 20.5 g are on Deposit atApp.
