1894 Eugene Debs On Cover “The Illustrated American” RARE:

Extremely early and ideal-for-display piece for Eugene Debs dating from 1894. There are very few great display items for Eugene Debs so early.

The Illustrated American was a weekly American periodical published from 1890 until 1900 that covered current events and is credited by many as the first photographic weekly news magazine in the United States.

Labor leader Eugene Debs graced the cover of the November 10, 1894 edition, in the wake of organizing, leading and settling the Pullman strike.

I believe this issue is excruciatingly rare. This is the only example I have ever seen. It’s great appeal is as a display piece (I haven’t read the entire issue but don’t see any feature on Debs; he had achieved great fame just prior and I think they were just presenting his portrait). The 32-page issue appears to have been removed from a bound book of The Illustrated American magazines and is reinforced with three staples along the spine (as seen if you look closely enough). This displays beautifully.

I wouldn’t want to have to find another example of this magazine. I don’t think I will ever see another! (If you have this please let me know so I can update this description!)
