This listing is for an 1895 edition of the ATLAS TO ACCOMPANY THE OFFICIAL REDORDS OF THE UNION AND CONFEDERATE ARMIES. this is a great civil war atlas full of double page maps of the battles in the war, also uniforms, equipment. It was published under the direction of the Hons. Redfield Proctor, Stephen R. Elkins, and Daniel S. Lamont Secretaries of War. It was published by the Washington Government Printing Office 1891-1895.The first inside white cover page has a hand-written note from C.L. Little pasted to the top of it. The note is dated Oct 1, 1896. The writing is very faint and difficult to read.This huge atlas, 25 pounds, contains 175 elephant folio sized maps. Plates 1-135C; Military Operations in the Field, Plates 136-161; General Topographical Maps, Plates 162-171; Military Divisions and Departments, Plates 172-175 Miscellaneous. The maps were printed using chromolithography and measure 29" x 18". Book measures 19" x 16" x 4.5". The level of detail in the maps is extraordinary, showing unit locations during battles at both the tactical and strategic level. Maps from all theaters and aspects of the war, including battles in the West, Virginia, naval battles, fortifications in cities in the North and many more. On the upper right corner of each plate is a hand written plate number. All 175 plates are in the book.There are 2 smaller addition pages pasted in, one between pages 10-11 and the other between pages 16-17.The outside boards shows wear to the corners and edges and spine. The first 2 inside cover pages do not lay flat. The back inside cover pages are like that also with one of them missing the upper corner, please look at the pictures. The first white inside cover page is missing the bottom corner which is laying behind the page. The 2 cover pages after it have a bad crease on the bottom corner. The title page and the next 4 pages have a faint crease on the bottom corner. Several of the plates have tears on the side edge or bottom edge ranging from1/8” to 1” in size. There is one page with what I consider major damage. This is the left-hand side of Plate 60; Map illustrating the Fourth epoch of the Atlanta campaign. There is an 10.5” tear starting on the top edge close to the spine and up from the bottom page edge 3.5”. This damage is shown in the pictures please look at them.
