1889-1904 LETTERS TO FARR ALPACA CO. - LEADING PRODUCER OF ALPACA IN THE WORLD:
$35.00

We are offering 14 letters, dating from 1889 to 1904, to Farr Alpaca Company, Holyoke, Massachusetts from different companies on their letterhead, all with Great Vignettes. [Only 3 are dated after 1900]The letters are from dealers in wool, a silk manufacturer, a company that dyed and bleached wool, companies involved in the manufacture of parts for equipment used in the production of alpaca yarn, and boiler companies. One letter is from the General Offices of the Commercial Travelers\' Fair to be held at Madison Square Garden, New York on December 1, 1896, advising Farr Alpaca Co. that they were appointed one of the \"HONORARY ADVISORY COMMITTEE of MERCHANTS and MANUFACTURERS\" for the Fair and Exposition. Another letter is from the Board of Public Works, Holyoke, Massachusetts -replying to Farr Alpaca Company\'s request that Bigelow Street be sprinkled [cleaned]. The letter states the board had referred the request for sprinkling to the Superintendent.
**NOTE** Farr Alpaca Company was a family-run Canadian company established in 1864 that relocated to Holyoke, MA in 1874. By the beginning of the 20th century, the company had the largest alpaca mill in the world and was a dominant producer in the industry. From what we read, the company accomplished this by relying on secrecy, rather than patenting their machinery. They used different machine shops throughout the city of Holyoke, with each one manufacturing a different component, and none having knowledge of the others\' components, so there was never the possibility of workers duplicating the entire process of production. Due to a changing market, the company was dissolved in 1942. **CONDITION** - Excellent.
