1887 CIVIL WAR SCRAPBOOK - ARTICLES BY MAJ. S. A. RANLETT 36th REG. MASS. VOL\'s:
$225.00

We are offering a scrapbook containing the complete series of 12 articles about the Civil War, titled \"War Pictures\", that were printed weekly from January 1 to March 19, 1887, in the Newton Graphic newspaper (Newton, Massachusetts). These articles were written by Major S. Alonzo Ranlett of the 36th Regiment Massachusetts Volunteers. In this series, Ranlett recounted his experiences during the Civil War, presenting them from a purely honest human perspective - sometimes portraying it in the glorified and romantic way war is often described, often describing the many hardships the soldiers faced, but always with the thread of comradery, friendship and loyalty amongst the men. The scrapbook also contains some newspaper articles that had been printed during the war and many articles that are placed loosely between the pages.
Pasted on the inside of the front cover is a Harden\'s Express receipt dated Oct. 30, 1862, for a package \"Marked for Captain A. Prescott, Co. B. 36th Massachusetts Volunteers, Washington [D.C.]\".Harden\'s was a railway express company that, based on the receipt, had offices at Fort Monroe, Annapolis, Washington D.C., New York, Boston, Philadelphia, Baltimore and Providence, apparently delivering mail and packages to soldiers and likely letters back to families. The vignette on the receipt depictsthe company\'s New York Express Office at the wharf and their Express train, withLady Liberty holding the Union flag and the Union Shield.
Placed loosely in the scrapbook is a newspaper printing ofPresident Lincoln\'s Proclamation on April 16, 1861 - which we are slightly paraphrasing for the purpose of brevity: \"Due to the Laws of our country that have been broken and the execution of those laws obstructed by South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Florida, Mississippi, Louisiana and Texas, a combination too powerful to be suppressed by the ordinary course of judicial proceedings, or by powers vested in Marshals of the law: I Abraham Lincoln......do call forth the militia of the States of the Union in the number of seventy five thousand.....\". Pasted on the inside of the back cover is a notice dated July 22, 1862, from the Governor of the Commonwealth [of Massachusetts] calling for 408 militia to enlist in the service. The City of Charlestown was giving a bounty of $100 to each recruit who was mustered into the United States Service. **CONDITION** - the front & back covers have separated from the scrapbook, but inside is in very good condition (see images)
