Up for sale is an original and scarce Cabinet Card photograph circa 1884 of Presidential Candidate General Benjamin F. Butler published & photographed by Warren of Massachusetts.

The image of General Butler is a very imposing 3/4 photograph of him set in a oval on the front of the mount. The backmark Warren, Boston and Cambridgeport , Mass. is printed . Also noted Gen Butler is written in pencil at the top of the mount.

The image of General Butler is clean with sharp focus , strong contrast and rich tonality. The corners of the mount are slightly clipped with age related minor soiling. The Cabinet card measures approximately 4 x 6” inches . Also noted under magnification on the lower right sides of the front of the mount is the impressed printing of G.W. Thorne , 60 Nassau St. New York probably the merchant distributor for this CDV.

The Cabinet Card of presidential candidate General Butler is in very good condition . considering its age.

Historical footnotes on General Benjamin F. Butler as the Presidential Candidate for the Greenback Party in 1884.

Benjamin F. Butler (November 5, 1818 - January 11, 1893) was an American major general of the Union Army , politician , lawyer, and businessman from Massachusetts. Butler is best known as a political major general of the Union Army during the American Civil War and for his leadership role in the impeachment of U.S. President Andrew Johnson. He was a colorful and often controversial figure on the national stage in the 19th century and on the Massachusetts political scene , serving five terms in the U.S. House of Representatives and running several campaigns for governor before his election to that office in 1882. In 1884, Butler was nominated by the Greenback and Anti - Monopoly parties as their candidate for President. The parties platforms advocating direct elections of senators, graduated income tax , and antitrust legislation , legal right of organized labor, continued issuance of greenbacks (paper money) among other matters.

In the 1884 Presidential Election, Butler only polled 175,000 out of 10 million votes cast in the election, which Glover Cleveland won. (Wikipedia)
