This is an original antique 1883 program from Ford’s Opera House in Washington, D.C. This program is four pages measuring about 14.5” x 10.75”. This theatre was operated by John T. Ford who is most remembered as the owner of Ford’s Theatre where President Abraham Lincoln was assassinated in April 1865. Following the assassination of Lincoln the U.S. Government seized Ford’s Theater and purchased it from John T. Ford for $88,000 so I believe this 1883 program is from one of Ford’s other theaters and not theater where Lincoln was killed.

The masthead indicates Washington D.C. and Volume IV Nos. 154-159 and text inside this program was printed by J.H. Polkinhorn. The featured entertainment was a production of Chimes of Normandy by C.D. Hess’s Acem English Opera Company. The front page has an advertisement for the coming attraction of Carrie Swain in MAB, The Miner’s Daughter. This program includes lots of graphically interesting advertising for local Washington D.C. businesses.
