1880’s Oliver Lewis cabinet card. Published by Harvey Husbands of Louisville. Husbands was one of the lesser known African American photo studio owners of the 19th century. Oliver Lewis also has a claim to being lost to history. Oliver win the first Kentucky Derby. There was a dominance of African American jockeys in the late 19th century. Oliver doesn’t get the notoriety as some of the others like Isaac Burns Murphy or Willie Simms. Lewis isn’t a member of the Racing Hall of Fame like the previously named jockey. I would consider his Kentucky Derby victory a milestone to say the least. The card was bought in a lot about 4 years ago. One of the cards in the lot was the cabinet card of Negro league baseball star Dan Penno. The Penno image is currently used by Seamheads for Penno’s stats page. There were a couple other notable cards to come out of that lot. I will try to list them soon. Cabinet has stains, toning and wear. A little less than 5 by 7 inch in size. Feel free to ask questions. It was the highest paid sport of the era. Lucrative. The first card of Hart goes for a lot of money. It wasn’t produced by an African American. This card was.
