1880s Negro League Baseball House Of David Founder Mary Purnell Fostoria OH Cdv:
$20000.00

1880’s Mary Purnell cdv. Published by N W Smith of Fostoria. Mary and Benjamin Purnell were the founders of the House of David. The House of David produced one of the most important barnstorming teams in baseball history. The House of David and Mary’s City of David baseball teams were intertwined with the negro leagues. The House of David touring teams ended in the mid 1930’s. Some of the baseball history associated with the House of David is really Mary’s City of David. The City of David teams went on into the 1950’s. The famous Cool Pappa Bell tours were against Mary’s City of David. Mary’s City of David played baseball and basketball under the moniker “House of David” for the same reason there were many HOD knockoffs. The House of David name was well known and respected by competitors and fans. As far as I heard, the House of David never had a basketball team. I don’t believe I’ve read references on “House of David” basketball mentioning Mary Purnell or the City of David. Mary Purnell lived into the 1950’s. I believe her role and contributions in baseball and basketball have been grossly overlooked from every angle. Since the purchase of this image, I’ve been on the quest to trace the Purnell’s footsteps. The footsteps previously claimed hazy by HOD historians. There is info out there if you look hard enough. The Purnell’s lived in Fostoria earlier in their history than the House of David historians have realized. Clara Boley Elder confirmed what my photographs show, the Purnell’s lived in Fostoria prior to 1902. During the Purnell trials Clara was interviewed and claimed the Purnell’s settled in Risingsun Ohio prior to Fostoria. Clara claimed the Purnell’s didn’t reach the success they had reached previously in Fostoria. The Purnell’s lived in Fostoria from 1902 to 1903 gaining some of their most important converts. From the claims of Clara, the Purnell’s previous history was more substantial. It is also seems to be questioned by HOD historians on when Ben became a Fling Roller. I’ve read several accounts the Purnell’s converted in Richmond Indiana around 1887 or 1888 and that Richmond had a Jezreelite community. I think it’s safe to say the Purnell’s were also in Michigan prior to 1892. I have photograph proof to back the statement. There is definitely a trail showing the unknown history the Purnell family. It’s slowly coming to light. Cdv measures about 2 by 4 inch in size. Stains toning and wear. I would call this a “blatantly obvious.” If anyone who views this has Ron Taylor’s ear, please share it with him. I would love to know the perspective of one of the members. Even if I don’t here what he thinks, I think he needs to see it. Feel free to ask questions.
