This autograph book was owned by Lizzie Beattie, a school girl who lived in Reno County, Kansas. It's 9 by 6 inches with 29 autographs dating from August 1889 to July, 1895. Homes of the writers include Pretty Prairie, Sego, Hutchinson, and Arlington in Reno County, Kingman in Kingman County, and Christopher, which I could not locate. The book is in rough condition - the covers are missing, the first page is apart from the book and the paper is very toned and fragile. Many of the pages are decorated with chromolithograph stickers. Autograph books were still popular when I was in elementary school in the 50's - everyone used the same often rhymed sentiments - I don't know where they came from. They tended to be about everlasting friendship or jokes about future marriages with fellow classmates. Autographs from the late 19th and early 20th century follow the same pattern, though there's more mention of religion and death. This booklet has the same sentimental examples but also some that are personal and quirky. The first one advises "if you ever see a flee run up a tree, pull his tail and think of me" (?!). Another says" Ida is my name, Kansas is my nation, I'll marry S. Thompson "if willing" in spite of all creation." Both Ida and Sherman signed this! Another rather unpoetic message wishes a life of peace that "glides along as slick as grease". There's a mostly unreadable and probably a bit insulting message from a little brother with lost of "x" kiss marks. An enigmatic message has the drawing of a baseball in flight and "hot stuff this evening". Finally there's a rather sad " You ask me to to write in your album I hardly know where to begin, there's nothing original in me unless it's original sin".
