1880's-1910 FOUR STEREO VIEWERS, 2 UNDERWOOD, 2 1880's UNMARKED:
$100.00

In this listing we are offering a group of four stereo viewers (stereoscopes). Two of the viewers have a "U & U Trade Mark" in a sun & were made by the Underwood & Underwood Company. The other two do not have any maker's markings. The viewer marked #1 in our photos is by Underwood. There are also some additional Underwood markings stamped under the slide piece on a metal flange. This #1 viewer is complete & is in working order with all components present including the folding handle. There is some wear to the velvet lining & there is some age toning to the metal. This viewer is 12 inches long by 7 3/4 inches wide. The weight is 6.6 ounces. Estimated circa 1902-1910 or so.
Number 2 in our photos appears to have been issued as a lower priced Underwood version of #1. This #2 in our photos has a "U & U Trade Mark" in a sun. This #2 in our photos appears to have never had any velvet lining on the edge that would have touched the person's face. This example has no handle. We are not clear as to whether or not this example originally had a handle & there seems to be no sign that it did. So, we will leave that point of determination up to the buyer. One point which is crystal clear on this viewer is that the slide piece which would have originally held the stereoview card is missing. This viewer is 12 inches long by 5 1/4 inches wide (would be larger if slide was present). The weight is 4.3 ounces. Estimated circa 1902-1910 or so.
Number 3 in our photos does not have any maker's markings. This is a well made viewer. The wood has developed a lovely rich patina from age. Our best estimate is that this viewer dates circa 1880's or so. There are some chips of wood missing from the right edge where this would fit against the person's face. This chipping covers an area approximately 1 3/4 inches long by 5/16 inches wide. The original wood handle is a bit loose & this handle is somewhat tight when pulling it down. All components are present & original. This is in working condition. This viewer is 13 inches long by 6 3/4 inches wide. The weight is 7.7 ounces.
Number 4 in our photos does not have any marker's markings. This is a well made viewer. The wood has developed a lovely rich patina from age. Our best estimate is that this viewer dates circa 1880's or so. The piece that would fit against the person's face has warped a bit at the right & left edges. The corner of one glass piece has a thin surface flake off which measures about 1/8 inch by 1/16 inch. The wood folding handle from underneath is missing. But, the circular piece with projecting prong which would hold the handle is still present. This is in working condition. This viewer is 13 inches long by 6 3/4 inches wide. The weight is 7.9 ounces.
To expedite packing & for greater safety in shipping we will remove the sliding arms when packing the viewers. The arms will be individually numbered so as to be easily put back on the correct viewers.
Please examine the photos closely and purchase based on your own judgement as to condition and value.
