VAN KINSBERGEN (Isidore,\' Dutch-Flemish engraver who took the first archaeological and cultural photographs of Java during the Dutch East Indies period in the nineteenth century, 1821-1905).A fabulous series of 5 unusually large and detailed original albumen photographs - each approx. 35cm x 27.5cm - of temple walls at Borodupur in Java, Indonesia, by Isidore van Kinsbergen, c1873.Five large and original vintage mammoth plate albumen photographs. Each mounted on album card (versos only, rectos blank). Undated but known to have been taken in 1873. Size: photographs - 34.5cm x 26.3cm, 35.5cm x 27.5cm, 35.3cm x 29cm , 34.5cm x 26.5cm and 34.3cm x 27.5cm / album cards - approx. 40cm x 31cm (or slightly larger or smaller). Minor age-toning and fading, but this is confined just to the edges of the photographs. Otherwise, tones are very strong. Album cards lightly trimmed along some edges.A superb series of rare vintage \'mammoth plate\' albumen photographs of the finely sculpted stone walls at the temple complex at Borodupur in Java, taken by Isidore van Kinsbergen in 1873 as part of a commission from the Batavia Society of Arts and Sciences in the Dutch East Indies.Van Kinsbergen masterfully uses the effects of sun and shadow in his photographs in order to accentuate the intricately carved dioramas which adorn these ancient temple walls. The detail in the photographs is far greater than our gallery pictures would suggest, and images of a far higher resolution could be obtained with a large enough scanner.Provenance: removed from a 19th century album of photographic views of the Far East.
