Circa 1870\'s-1880\'s tintype of five baseball players. Amazingly, the man at the front center has a coin balanced on his head. Based on the size of the coin in comparison with his head we would say that the coin was probably a half dollar.
We are theorizing that the coin on the man\'s head was going to be in a bet on an upcoming baseball game that the men would participate in. But, of course, we do not know that for a fact. In any event, this is certainly very unusual tintype! The man at the front left is wearing a medal suspended from a pinback ribbon badge. Possibly an award for accomplishment in a previous game?The photo measures 3 9/16 inches by 2 3/8 inches.The tintype is very sharp & has rich contrasts. The emulsion on the surface is in lovely condition & has a marvelous smooth feeling on the front as well as the back.There are a number of smooth bends.The majority of these bends do not show at all when the photo is viewed straight on. But, they are all visible when the tintype is held at an angle under a bright light. Otherwise, the front as well as the back are both fresh & appealing looking.
