1865 Confederate GeneralPierre T. Beauregard Document Up for sale is a February 13, 1865, period copy of correspondencefrom General Beauregard’s Chief Quartermaster, Major Edward Willis, to Beauregardregarding contracting to pay for government supplies with cotton. GeneralBeauregard, who was commanding the army opposing General Sherman had just leftAugusta, GA and arrived in Columbia, SC where the document was sent. Beauregardgave the evacuation order for Lt. General Hardee to evacuate Charleston, SC,three days later as Sherman was marching north and couldn’t be stopped, and Beauregardwas replaced by General Joseph E. Johnston on February 22 in an effort to blockSherman. The document is signed by General Beauregard’s AAG, Lt. Col. John M.W.Otey. Ironically Major Edward Willis went on to be a cotton merchant after thewar. What a great piece of Confederate/Civil War memorabilia andan excellent addition to any Civil War collection.
