We are offering a Brooklyn, New York check dated July 1, 1864, drawn from the estate of H. B. Cromwell, paid to Chauncey L. Mitchell, M.D. \"For Medical Attendance from January 17, 1864 to date, including attendance by Dr. Hallett\". Check is in the amount of $512.00, and it is the doctor\'s personal printed check with blanks that would be filled in by the person paying. The check is marked \"Paid July 12, 1864. Signed Minott W. Silliman\" [Silliman was a name connected to the Cromwell family through marriage]. Printed along the side of the check is \"Office Hours: 7 to 9 A.M., and 2 to 4 P.M.\"
Considering the high amount charged for a few months of care, the fact that Dr. Mitchell\'s office was only open only four hours a day, and that he employed another physician, leads us to believe he had a lucrative practice that was likely limited to a select group of wealthy patients and their families, including H. B. Cromwell.Henry B. Cromwell was born 1828 and died 1864. From our research, he resided in Brooklyn, NY and was owner of the Cromwell Steamship Line that ran steamers from New York to Louisiana.
