Herewe offer a rare and unusual Civil War relic: the July 4, 1863 through June 17, 1865 collection of Punch Almanacks, published in London. These are the actual magazines bound together in a single volume, as was a common practice at the time. Punch was a political humor magazine with social commentary, and was densely filled with large, interesting cartoons. As this period marked a most dire and uncertain period of the Civil War, this collection features numerous Civil War-themed political cartoons, including many full-page images of Lincoln. It also features Punch\'s memorial poem noticing Lincoln\'s assassination and sympathy cartoon featuring Britannia, the national personification, comforting Columbia, her American counterpart. The Britslooked on the war as a savage expression of Northern dominance, so most of these are cartoonslampooning America, cynical of Lincoln, sympathetic to the South, showing the central issue to be the issue of slavery, characterizing the enslaved as unworthy of dignity. The collection is, in fact, sound evidence of Lincoln\'s greatness, evidence he was leading--forcing--a world away from savagery and ignorance, much to his own expense. Here, you can also watch the development of the Brother Jonathan character (the first Uncle Sam), as he is replaced by the more visually-striking Lincoln character. 3/4 leather binding features marbled endpapers and marbled text block edge.

Left side of spine has been secured with a strip of tulle applied with acid-free binder\'s adhesive. Boards are worn (please see pics). Front pastedown features a period bookplate. Binding is very square and firm. Interior is in splendid condition. Very clean, bright, and crisp illustrations and text on high quality pulp. Measures approximately 11 x 9-inches, 1082 indexed pages.
