We are offering seven 1860s CDV photographs of known people - politicians, leader of industry, religious figures, and royalty. Some taken by renowned photographers. The photos are identified on the back in pencil.
.) Ginery Twitchell (1811-1883) - President of Boston and Worcester Railroad; President of the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway; and Republican Representative for Massachusetts from 1867 to 1871. Photo is by Claflin's, Worcester, Massachusetts.
.) Ginery Twitchell's children - "Miss & Master Twitchell, Brookline 1863" is written in pencil on the back. Photo by J. W. Black, Boston.
.) Robert Charles Winthrop (1809-1894) - Massachusetts Representative, Senator, and Speaker of the House spanning a 16-year period from 1835 to 1851. Photo by Black, Boston [We assume J. W. Black].
.) John A. Andrew (1818-1867) - affiliated with the Whig Party, was Governor of Massachusetts during the Civil War from 1861 to 1866. In 1848 he joined the Free-Soil movement, which was against the spread of slavery. He helped organize the Republican Party in 1854. Photo by John Ward, Boston.
.) Otto von Bismarck (1815-1898) - Prime Minister of Prussia from 1862-1890, first Chancellor of the German Empire from 1871-1890, and Foreign Minister from 1862-1871. Photo is by Numa Blanc [Paris] "Photographe de S. M. Le Roi de Prusse" (translated "Photographer of HM the King of Prussia").
.) Schuyler Colfax (1823-1885) - served as Vice President under President Ulysses S. Grant from 1869 to 1873. Before the Civil War he was a member of the Whig Party, then the Know-Nothing Party, and switched to the Republican Party when he was elected to Congress in 1854, where he also served as Speaker of the House until 1869 when he became Vice President. The photo does not have the photographer's name.
.) Father Kemp (identified in period ink below his photo). Written on the back is "James Kemp ? or his son". James Kemp, Episcopal Bishop of Maryland, was born in 1764 and died in 1827, so obviously this couldn't be him.Possibly it's his son.We did find information on Robert "Father" Kemp" who published a collection of music known as "Father Kemp's Old Folks' Concert Music". Heformed a traveling troupe that toured the United States and England singing songs by early American composers in period costume. The troupe's soloist was Jenny Twitchell Beal (who likely was Ginery Twitchell's daughter, pictured in our photo of his children). Photo by Frank Rowell, Boston.
