Condition:

Rich tonal image, crack at top edge into sitter’s face, india ink backing shows some flaking, original tapes still in place, case hinge just holding, some looseness to corners and top front edge of left case side shows slight pre-Civil War portrait of a young gentleman presumably from Troy, New York. Clearly in its original brass mat which is stamped with the photographer’s name, it was acquired in a case that carries the name of a different Troy photographer.

Isaac A. Branshaw is listed in Craig’s Daguerreian Registry as active in Troy from 1857 to 1859. He is listed at 98 Congress Street in the 1857-58 directories where his is said to also have resided. In 1859 he is listed as living on Mechanic Street, however, no business address is noted.

The photographer noted on the case was Christopher C. Schoonmaker also listed in Craig’s as a Daguerreian first in Albany, New York in 1850 as a partnership of Schoonmaker & Morrison. From 1857-61 he is listed as an ambrotypist in Troy, New York at 282 River Street. The years 1857-58 he is listed in partnership as Irving & Schoonmaker and from 1858 until 1861 he is listed only as Schoonmaker at the same address. Based on a close examination of the brass mats and the case it seems clear that the brass mat is original to the image whereas the case was a later addition or marriage since we can find not connection between the two photographers. An interesting side note is that William Henry Jackson was hired by Schoonmaker in 1858 as a retoucher.
